Edinburgh College’s fleet of electric pool cars, vans, & minibus provide staff with a sustainable, low-carbon, low-cost transport option for intra-campus and other business travel. Significant impacts have been made in reducing the number of trips carried out in staff members' own cars - the so-called 'Grey Fleet' - with quantifiable and corresponding reductions in both CO2 emissions and fuel expenses.
The vehicles are also fully integrated with our curriculum, offering students hands-on experience which benefits their understanding of environmentally friendly transport technologies. Usage data generated by the EV’s is used in class projects, and, in addition, paid scholarships have been created through the project to enhance student engagement and progression.
This successful project trailblazes practices that can be replicated in similar Further or Higher Education establishments, and other institutions such as small businesses. The advantages are real and easy to duplicate, enabling quick wins and immediate valuable impacts.
Since 2012, the fleet has covered a distance of over 210,000 miles, saved more than 50 tonnes/CO2e of Greenhouse Gas emissions, and over £100,000 worth of equivalent ‘Grey Fleet’ fuel costs, while positively influencing both staff and public perceptions of EV’s & their supporting infrastructure.
